Pilates is a form of exercise that aims to develop flexibility, good posture, strength, and balance at all the same time. It is also a series of about 500 exercises inspired by calisthenics, yoga, and ballet. It was invented in the early 20th century (1920) by a physical trainer, Joseph Pilates, who created the movements to help English vets recover from injuries sustained during World War I.

Pilates can be performed in the aerobic or non-aerobic form of exercise. It requires concentration and focus because you will move your body through precise ranges of motion. This exercise can lengthen and strengthen your major muscles group in your body. Pilates movements have prescribed placement, rhythm, and breathing pattern.

In Pilates, your muscle never worked to exhaustion, so there is no sweating or straining, just intense concentration. Usually, the workout consists of a variety of exercise sequences that are performed in low repetitions, usually 5 - 10 times, over a session of 45 to 90 minutes. Mat work and specialized equipment for resistance are used. Pilates can suit everybody from elite athletes to people with limited mobility, pregnant women, and people with low fitness levels. You can attend any classes of Pilates that held in specialized Pilates studios, physiotherapy clinics, or at your local leisure facility and even in your home. So, WHAT IS THE BENEFITS OF PILATES?

# IMPROVE BODY POSTURE

One main goal of Pilates was aimed to improve your body posture. All the movements that you applied in the exercises were to promote proper skeletal alignment and it will strengthen the muscles which are responsible for good posture. The good posture you get from Pilates allows you to move more freely, breathe more easily, and avoid such as poor blood circulation, backaches, neck pain, a tight chest, slipped discs, and other back problems.

# BETTER BALANCE

Most of the Pilates movement can boost your balance. The movement has many practical benefits in your day to day life and helps you to better coordinate your movements, reduces your risk of falling, makes you more agile, increases your reaction times, and much more!

#ENHANCED CORE STABILITY

One of the six principles of Pilates is centering. This principle states that strength should be developed from the inside out, and every movement should begin from the core and flow outward to the limbs. Performing the movements in this way strengthens the deep muscles in your abdomen, lower back, and pelvic floor. It also provides the rest of your body with the stability it needs to function effectively.

#IMPROVED FLEXIBILITY

Did you know, Pilates workouts involved numerous dynamic movements? These dynamic movements gently stretch and lengthen your muscles while also increasing the range of motion in your joints which ultimately boosts your overall flexibility. By improving flexibility, it can reduce muscle soreness, enhanced blood flow, and reduced injury risk.

# INCREASED MENTAL FITNESS

Two of the main principles of Pilates are breathing, and concentration. These two principles will help you to develop mental focus, and fitness as you complete your workouts. Pilates also can reduce stress levels, increase happiness, and much more!

#GREATER STAMINA

Other than that, Pilates also can improve your stamina. Traditional strength training generally involves lifting heavy weights for short periods of time. However, Pilates involves longer flowing sequences of exercise that constantly engage your muscles, and build up your endurance. By increasing stamina will give you positive effects on your overall energy levels and allows you to exercise at a greater intensity for longer without becoming fatigued.

#INCREASED STRENGTH

Last but not least, Pilates will strengthen all the muscles in your body by using dynamic and static strength training. The structure of Pilates exercises also ensures that all the muscles in your body get targeted and that no muscle groups are ignored. The best part is Pilates can develop functional strength and endurance which can be applied in your day to day life.

I hope this information a little bit helps you to understand what Pilates is. Pilates exercises still not very common in our country but, its already existed! So, Let's explore together! 🧘

    1. Yoga can be used for improving the flexibility of the body and it will also gradually increase the flexibility of your joints. Whereas Pilates focuses on trying to relax muscles which are tense and provide strengthening of the numerous muscles of the body. I hope this can help you :)
